October 2020 Update: Cricut Design Space is shrinking the size of large templates when using an iphone, ipad or imac.

As of August 29, 2019 Cricut updated the computer Design Space (Version 4.6.4) to once again import SVG templates at their correct size.

Cricut’s most recent update in July 2019 now shrinks the size of some SVG templates.

The white template is the original template size of 9 inches wide. The new version of Cricut Design Space converted the size to 7.738 inches wide when it opened in the program.

This is the information I was given by a Cricut representative on July 30, 2019.

  1. They chose to update the plug-in to convert images (including SVGs) to smaller sizes to prevent an issue they were having with large file sizes crashing the program.
  2. They have set the new dimensions to fit within 11.5×23.5 inches.
HOWEVER, THIS IS NOT ALWAYS ACCURATE! I imported a template approximately 9×15, and it still reduced the size of the SVG.
  3. They explained to me the system can not rotate an object to fit within those parameters.
When I explained I had a template that did not need rotated, but it still was reduced in size, they did not have a reason as to why it would resize the template anyway.
  4. This will happen with SVG templates already in your upload folder on Cricut Design Space.
  5. It does not reduce the size with any consistency. Larger templates are sometimes imported even smaller than a smaller template Design Space resized to import.
  6. At this moment in time, they do not plan on changing it back or giving the option to import “true to size” in the future.

What does this mean for the size specific SVG box templates on SVGBoxCuts?

  1. Many of the templates will still import correctly.
  2. Unfortunately because Cricut Design Space does not reduce the larger template sizes by the same percent, there is not a standard resize option as there is for some other cutting programs.
  3. Larger templates that do not import correctly will have two options.
    A. Contact me using our contact page or via email at support@svgboxcuts.com to request the template pieces each be saved as an individual file and sent to you free of charge.
(For example: You might have a three piece template where each piece will fit on 8.5×11 paper, but when it imports together it might be 12.5 inches wide. The 12.5 inches will cause Cricut Design Space
to shrink the template, but if you upload each piece individually they will import correctly.)
    B. Contact me using our contact page or via email at support@svgboxcuts.com to request the original dimensions of the total template. Then reset the size in Cricut Design Space
    BEFORE you ungroup the templates.

I will keep checking Cricut Design Space and update this post should Cricut decide to update Design Space to allow our larger templates to once again be uploaded true to size.
