Instructions on how to change a straight SVG box lid to a scalloped lid using Cricut Design Space.

This tutorial will explain how to convert one of our straight edge SVG box lids into a scalloped SVG lid using Cricut Design Space.

This post will show three variations for creating a scalloped lid. It is important to remember that all options will alter the size of the height of the lid. (The amount the lid overlaps on the box.) Option 1 and 3 will make the lid slightly longer. Option 2 will make the lid slightly shorter.

Option 1: Creating a Scalloped SVG Lid Using Cricut Design Space and the Splice Tool

(Option one will make the side height of the lid slightly taller depending on the size of your scallops.)

Creating the Scallops

  • Change the color of your template to white so you can see the lines.
  • Using the Shapes Menu draw a circle or oval.
  • Copy the circle by right clicking your mouse and selecting Copy.
  • Paste the circle as the number of times you would like scallop edges. (Right clicking your mouse and select paste. Repeat for the number of times.)

  • Slightly overlap the circles.
  • Select all the circles then select the Align Menu.
  • Select Align top.
  • With all the circles still selected evenly space the circles by selecting Distribute Horizontally.

  • Move the row of circles onto the SVG box lid template.
  • Unlock the Maintain Aspect Ratio Lock.
  • With all the circles still selected, use the green arrow to stretch the circles to fit the width of the template.

  • Move the row of ovals off of the template.
  • With all the ovals still selected. Click Weld.

Cutting the Ovals to Create Scallops with the Slice Tool

  1. Draw a square using the Shapes Menu.

  • Place the square in the middle of your oval line.
  • Stretch the square so it is the same width as your oval line.
  • Then click Slice from the bottom menu.
  • Separate all of the pieces the Slice created.
  • Select the scallop shape you like the most, and delete all of the other sliced pieces.

Joining the Scallops to the SVG Box Lid Template

  • Select the scallop
  • Right click your mouse.
  • Select Copy.
  • Right click your mouse again.
  • Select paste. Repeat 3 times so you have a total of 4 scallop lines.
  • Click the SVG box lid template.
  • Right click your mouse.
  • Select Ungroup, so the dotted lines are now separate from the outside lines.

  • Line up one scallop line with the original template.
  • Select only the scallop line and the outside template. Do not select the dotted lines.
  • Click Weld from the bottom menu.
  • Repeat for the opposite side of the template.

  • Rotate the other two scallop lines, so they are vertical.
  • In order to have two smaller scallop lines you will need to repeat the Slice process.
  • Draw a square.
  • Place it over the bottom of the scallop line that extends below the SVG box lid template.
  • Select both the square and the scallop.
  • Click Slice.
  • Repeat for the other vertical scallop.

  • Attach the remaining two sides the same way you did the first two sides.
  • Line up one vertical side with the lid template.
  • Select the scallop and the template by just touching the two areas. (Remember not to select around the entire area as that will weld the dotted lines to the template.)
  • Click Weld.

  • Delete the left over sliced pieces.

Finalizing the SVG Scalloped Lid Template

  • Click on the SVG scalloped box lid template.
  • Right click your mouse.
  • Select Send to Back.

  • Change your template color back to white.
  • You will now be able to see the dotted cut lines again.
  • Select everything for the template.
  • Click Attach in the bottom menu.

Don’t worry if the scallops do not extend completely to the end of the tab. This area will be glued to the other side to create the 3D box lid. (Snip off any excess after glued together.)

Scallops in glue tab area are okay for scalloped SVG box lid.
  • Click Make It

Option 2 : Creating a SVG Scallop Lid using Cricut Slice Tool to Create a Curved Line

(Option two will make the side height of the lid slightly shorter depending on the size of your scallops.)

  • Follow Option 1 down through slicing the ovals with a square and deleting any extra pieces.
  • Select your scallop.
  • Right click your mouse.
  • Select Copy.
  • Right click your mouse again.
  • Select Paste.
  • Overlap the two scallops leaving a slight gap.
  • Select both scallops.
  • Click Slice.
  • Separate all pieces.
  • Delete the extra pieces.
  • Move the curved line on top of the SVG box lid template.
  • Unlock the lock for resizing.
  • Flatten the curved line so it fits BETWEEN the dotted lines and the outer lines.

  • Right click your mouse.
  • Select Copy.
  • Right click your mouse again.
  • Select paste. 3x
  • Rotate the lines and place on the template.
  • If there is not much size difference you can simply shorten the vertical lines. If there is a large difference use the slice feature to shorten the lines. (Refer back to Option 1 if you need more instructions.)
  • Select everything.
  • Click Attach from the bottom menu.
  • Click Make It

*Please remember: Cricut will cut on both sides of the curved line.

Option 3 : Easiest Option Creating a Scalloped SVG Lid Using Cricut Design Space

(Option three will make the side height of the lid slightly taller depending on the size of your scallops.)

  • Draw a Circle using the Shapes Menu
  • Unlock the Maintain Aspect Ratio.
  • Click on the green arrow and drag the circle to make an oval.
  • Select the oval.
  • Right click your mouse.
  • Select Copy.
  • Right click your mouse again.
  • Select Paste.
  • Continue to paste the number of ovals that you would like for scallops.
  • Select all ovals.
  • Select the Align Menu.
  • Select Align Top to evenly align the ovals.
  • Select Distribute Horizontally to evenly space the ovals.
  • Keep all the ovals selected.
  • Right click your mouse.
  • Select copy.
  • Right click your mouse again.
  • Select paste.
  • Rotate the copied row of ovals.
  • Delete any ovals that extend past the length of the side of the SVG box lid template.
  • Copy and paste the row of ovals for each side.

  • Click the main SVG box lid template.
  • Right click your mouse.
  • Select Ungroup so the dotted cut lines are no longer grouped with the outside lines.
  • Select one row of ovals and the main template by touching both areas. Do not select the entire box and include the dotted lines.
  • Click Weld from the bottom menu.
  • Repeat selecting one side with the template and welding it until you have completed all four sides.
  • If you try to include everything at once for the weld, Cricut will weld the dotted lines and they will no longer be there.
  • Click the template.
  • Select Send to Back
  • Change the template color back to white, so you can see the dotted cut lines.
  • Click Attach from the lower menu.
  • Click Make It
